![]() The Republican campaign to manipulate elections expands on the Jim Crow playbook and has been in operation for some time. The Republicans, under Richard Nixon’s “Southern Strategy,” rushed in to appeal to racist whites and have built on it ever since. The Democratic Party was once the principal perpetrator and beneficiary of Jim Crow laws, but the party’s embrace of civil rights in the 1960s made it a champion (if an imperfect one) of voters of color. In the Jim Crow era, the South’s advantage in those two institutions helped deny full citizenship to Blacks for a century after the Civil War. The Electoral College and the Senate, two massively undemocratic institutions, were partly a response to demands from slaveholding states that gave them disproportionate power. Manipulating the vote to partisan advantage is nothing new in the United States but rather goes back to the Constitutional Convention. People with the motive to make it happen are manufacturing the means. The prospect of this democratic collapse is not remote. Thousands of votes will be thrown away, or millions, to produce the desired effect. If the plot succeeds, the ballots cast by American voters will not decide the presidency in 2024. It will rely on subversion more than violence, although each will have its place. One of the earlier and most comprehensive forecasts came in a December article by Barton Gellman for the Atlantic, who wrote: … The next attempt to overthrow a national election may not qualify as a coup. While some see Biden’s eventual taking of office as evidence that the system worked despite the effort to undermine it, analysts not on the payroll of Fox News or the One America Network look at the machinations of Trump and his allies before and after the election and see how they might have worked - and might work next time to undercut and corrupt an election in his favor. ultimately failed in 2020, they began writing a playbook that they can repeat and expand on in the future. The irony of the Trumpists’ slogan “Stop the Steal” was that in reality it was Trump and his cronies trying to steal the 2020 election, while Democrats - and a few Republicans - were trying to deliver an honest count of the results. This has implications not only for the Democratic Party, and not only for the survival of constitutional government, but for the broader left/progressive agenda as well. If they can win fairly, fine for them if not, they plan to use manipulation, voter suppression, threats - and, if necessary, violence. By now it’s commonly accepted in even the most mainstream of media that the Republicans are planning a ruthless campaign to win back the House and Senate in 2022 and the White House in 2024. Within this research domain, I am interested in evaluating the different possible explanations for why collaborative inhibition occurs, as well as the factors that increase and decrease the extent to which it occurs. Performance of the nominal groups is often better than that of the collaborative groups (i.e., collaborative inhibition), suggesting there is something about collaborating with others that interferes with or otherwise impairs remembering. Then, the performance of the nominal groups (people who didn’t work together to recall, but whose output was nonetheless combined as if they were a group) is compared to the performance of the collaborative groups mentioned above. That is, after the individuals have recalled what they remember, the individuals are divided into after-the-fact groups and the group is given credit for what was recalled by the individuals. Collaborative inhibition is revealed by creating “nominal” groups from the individuals. ![]() The usual finding is that memory performance for the groups (averaged across all groups) is better than the memory performance for the individuals (averaged across all individuals). Experimental data show that when animals are interrupted while executing a task, they optimize the use of prospective memory and retrospective memory in. It is revealed in the laboratory by having individuals try to remember information on their own versus having individuals try to remember information in collaboration with others. The processes of generation and recognition.Īnother such research interest is collaborative inhibition in memory, which can occur when a group of individuals works together to try to remember information. When it does not, as well as the role of organization and distinctiveness in In understanding when the generation-recognition model can account for recall versus Within this research domain, I am interested Recall, and then they try to recognize the generated candidates as having beenĬandidates that are both generated and recognized are then recalled theĬandidates that are generated but not recognized are not recalled. Now, almost 100 years later, a formal declaration of independence by the Continental Congress was the only thing standing in the way of a complete break with King George. This led to the so-called Glorious Revolution, which drove James off the throne. ![]() In 1688, Parliament had similarly denounced King James II. This was not the first time in English history that such a thing had occurred. In May 1776, the Continental Congress took a fateful step and passed a resolution that attacked King George himself. These actions by the British king and government inflamed Americans who were undecided about independence and made war with England all but certain. Meanwhile, the royal governor of Virginia offered freedom to slaves who joined the British cause. This act allowed the seizing of American ships, justified the burning of colonial towns, and led to sending war ships and troops, including foreign mercenaries, to put down the rebellion. In August 1775, King George issued a proclamation charging that the Americans "had proceeded to open and avowed rebellion." A few months later, Parliament passed a significant act that placed the American colonies outside the king's protection. ![]() Neither Parliament nor King George, however, were interested in negotiations to prevent all-out war. Jefferson's Declaration of the Causes and Necessity for Taking Up Arms stopped short of declaring independence, but pointed out the folly of governing the American colonies from England. Even at this late date, the Congress still blamed only Parliament and the king's government ministers, not King George himself, for the growing conflict. Soon after Jefferson arrived in Philadelphia, Congress assigned him to draft a document explaining why the colonists had taken up arms against England. But the "British brethren" refused to do this. Colonists even appealed to the British people, pleading with them to elect different members of Parliament who would be more open to compromise. Even so, most in Congress wanted to work out some mutual agreement with the mother country.įor more than a year, the Americans had sent petitions to England proclaiming their grievances against the British government. Fighting at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill had already broken out between the colonists and British troops. Thomas Jefferson, age 33, arrived in Philadelphia on June 20, 1775, as a Virginia delegate to the Second Continental Congress. Thomas Jefferson, drawing on the current thinking of his time, used natural rights ideas to justify declaring independence from England.
